THE JIST

90 DAYS UNTIL I DIE is an adult black comedy-horror comic/show/whatever you want to imagine it to be. It follows Charley, a 20-something college dropout who somehow caught a nasty case of vampirism. Given a life expectancy of about three months, Charley embarks on a road trip along with two other vampires and a psychic to find a cure before he either becomes one of the living dead, or the monster hunter on their trail kills him first.
The story takes inspiration from various vampire teen/adult shows and movies from that time, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, From Dusk Till Dawn, and Queen of the Damned. Throughout the road trip, Charley and co.- nicknamed “The Drac Pack”- encounter various other monsters, such as ghosts, zombies, sirens, werewolves, and more, some of which temporarily join the Pack.
THE SETTING

The story is set in the summer of 2003, specifically from about June until August. The road trip is mostly consolidated to the southern United States, starting in California and ending in roughly Maryland. Since the main characters are vampires, most of the story takes place at night. Throughout the story, the Pack visits much of what you’d find on the road- gift shops, gas stations, hokey attractions, motels- as well as a few small towns. The Pack’s main method of transportation is a 1971 Chevrolet hearse, courtesy of Mel. It’s not very efficient on gas, but it makes for a great ride to transport vampires in, even if it is a little on the nose.
THE THEME

Charley contemplates his own mortality and what he wants to be in life. What would immortality mean to someone with a dead-end job and a bleak future? Everyone dies eventually, but what if you were suddenly given only a few months to live? Death persists in 90 DAY UNTIL I DIE, whether it be mortal or immortal. Characters like Mary and Vince foreshadow what Charley could become, but also how he could view his affliction. Charley’s unique case of vampirism is akin to a terminal illness. Although the story starts off as a monster-of-the-week sort of thing, with each passing day, Charley becomes less and less human. His condition is physically debilitating; he develops all of the drawbacks of vampirism but none of the advantages. But, he still chooses to persist. Over the course of his journey, Charley turns into someone who wants to live, and will fight to get it. The road trip isn’t just about finding a cure, but spending his last few months as a human doing something he’s never done before if he can’t.
